[드러머] 할로우잰 류명훈이 밴드를 떠나다

할로우잰의 드러머 류명훈이 하차한다는 소식을 들었다. 후임은 서태지밴드의 드러머 최현진이 영입되었다. 

드러머 류명훈은 우리나라에서 찾아보기 어려운 독보적인 드러머이다. 하드코어/펑크/포스트락씬의 역사이다. 그쪽 판에서 드러머 강수호 수준이다. 굻직한 밴드에서 몸을 담아왔다. 그가 거쳐간 밴드를 보면  49 Morphines, 썩스터프, Firestorms, Things We Say, Join The Circle, 13 Steps, The Finnn, 럭스(Rux), 잠비나이(Jambinai), 할로우잰(Hollow Jan) 등이다. 우리나라 2000년대 초반부터 우리나라 언더그라운드 하드코어펑크씬을 지켜온 밴드들이다.

민첩하게 묵직한 그의 드러밍은 내가 제일 좋아하는 부분이자 그의 플레이에서 특기할 만한 점이다. 실제로 보거나 양질의 라이브 레코딩에서 그의 진가는 발휘된다. 특히 13스텝스와 같은 하드코어펑크와 잠비나이와 할로우잰과 같은 포스트락에서 그 스타일은 가장 정점으로 들린다. 거칠지만 충분히 공감 가능한 드럼톤은 영역대가 넓어 리듬섹션 뿐 아니라 전반적인 밴드악기 전체를 어우른다. 다양한 세션활동으로 빛어진 안정감을 자랑한다.  

드러밍 모션은 딱딱하게 보일수도 있지만 매우 정제되되어 있다. 심벌의 서스테인과 악센트를 최대한 길게 유지하려는 고민이 담겨있다. 소리가 공백을 채우는 맛이 기가 막히다. 잠비나이의 대표곡인 소멸의 시간도 그렇지만 무저갱이란 곡의 라이브를 보면 심벌을 중심으로 그루브를 만들어 나가는데, 단순한 심벌의 어택감이 아니라 치고 나서의 서스테인까지 연주의 일환으로 이어지고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 드럼은 보컬이 가사전달 보다는 악기로 역할하는 포스트락 밴드에서 빛을 발하는 듯하다. 

그의 후임인 최현진(할로우잰), 최재혁(잠비나이) 모두 인디씬에서 획을 긋는 걸출한 드러머이지만, 전임자가 그려놓은 톤과는 사뭇다른 정제된 느낌이라 조금은 밋밋한 느낌이 없지 않다. 류명훈 드러머의 행보를 기대하며 운영하는 인디클럽인 샵 역시 잘되었으면 좋겠다. 

The drummer of Korean screamo band Hollow Jan, Ryu Myung-hoon, has announced his departure. His replacement is Choi Hyun-jin, who currently plays in the Seo Taiji band. 

Ryu is a unique drummer that is hard to find in Korea. His drumming history is in line with the hardcore/punk/post-rock scene in Korea. He is like a Steve Gadd figure in this scene as he has played with the must-see bands in Korea for the music fans of these genres. These bands include 49 Morphines, Suckstuff, Firestorms, Things We Say, Join The Circle, 13 Steps, The Finn, Rux, Jambinai, Hollow Jan and many more. These bands have been part of Korea's underground hardcore punk scene since the early 2000s.

His agile and heavy drumming is my favourite part of his playing and what makes him stand out. He really shines in person and on quality live recordings. His style is at its best in hardcore punk like 13 Steps and post-rock like Jambinai and HollowJan. His drumming has a wide range, encompassing not only the rhythm section but all the band's instruments. He has a sense of stability that shines through in the various sessions.  

The drum movement may seem stiff, but it is very refined. A lot of thought has gone into making the sustains and accents of the cymbals last as long as possible. The way the sound fills in the gaps is incredible. The same goes for Zambinai's signature song, Time of Annihilation, but if you watch him play Abyss live, he builds a groove around the cymbals, and it's not just the attack of the cymbals, but the sustain after the hit. That's why his drums seem to shine in post-rock bands where the vocals are more of an instrument than a lyricist. 

His successors, Choi Hyun-jin (HollowJan) and Choi Jae-hyuk (Zambinai), are both excellent drummers who have made a name for themselves in the indie scene, but their sounds are different from their predecessors and have a more refined feel. I hope that Ryu Myung-hoon's indie club Shop will also do well.
