[전시] 구본창 회고전 항해

서울시립미술관 근처에서 직장생활을 하는건 축복이다. 많은 미술관을 아는 건 아니지만 서울시립미술관은 전세계에 내놓고 자랑할만한 미술관이다. 미술을 공공재로 다루는 기관으로서 시립미술관은 일반 시민들이 적절하게 다가갈 수 있으면서, 미술씬에서 존재감이 묵직한 작가를 세련되게 소개한다. 않은 부담스럽지 않은 크기의 미술관은  시민들의 왕래가 많은 길목에 존재감을 뽐내지 않으며 은근히 스며들면서 공공재로서 미술관이 보여줄 수 있는 미덕이 되고 있다.  

2024년 1사분기까지 이어지는 전시 역시 서도호(북서울), 이동기(북서울), 박미나와 Sasa[44](서소문본관) 등 현재 한국 미술을 구성하는 동시대 4-50대 작가를 선보이고 있다. 특히 서소문 본관에서 열린 구본창의 회고전 '항해'는 그 스케일과 전시구성 면에서 올해의 전시라고 꼽고 싶을 정도로 흥미로웠다. 한 아티스트의 일대기를 일목요연하고 지루하지 않게 한 공간 안에 담았다. 큐레이터와 아티스트가 쏟은 고민이 한걸음씩 걸으면서 느껴졌다. 한 없이 정적인 구본창의 사진이 담고 있는 역설적인 어떤 활발한 에너지가 점차 증폭된다. 단순히 책과 온라인 상에서 느낄 수 없는 물질적인 느낌을 만끽했다. 

좀더 자세한 리뷰는 다음에 한두번 더 보고 적으려 한다. 

I am blessed to work near the Seoul Museum of Art(SEMA). I don't know many museums, but the Seoul Museum of Art is one that I am proud to show to the world. As an organization that treats art as a public good, the museum is accessible to the general public while showcasing artists with a strong presence in the art scene in a tasteful way. The museum's modest size allows it to blend into the busy streets of the city without being overbearing, a virtue that museums can showcase as a public good.  

The exhibition, which will run through the first quarter of 2024, also showcases artists in their 40s and 50s who are currently shaping Korean art, including Do Ho Suh, Dongi LEE, and PARK Mina and Sasa[44]. In particular, Koo Bon-chang's retrospective "Voyage" at Seosomun Main Building was the most interesting exhibition of the year in terms of its scope and organization. It summarized an artist's life in a single space without being boring. I could feel the care that the curator and the artist put into it as I walked around. The paradoxical active energy of the old, static photographs is gradually amplified. I enjoyed a material feeling that I cannot feel in books and online.
